Interfacility Transfer Service

Starting this fall, Ivinson Memorial Hospital will officially oversee interfacility transfer/transport (IFT) services, ensuring seamless, world-class patient transportation between healthcare facilities.

This initiative reflects our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our community while maintaining high-quality care. By bringing IFT operations in-house, Ivinson plans to build a dedicated transfer team and continue our partnership with the Laramie Fire Department during this transition. See what’s ahead in the full press release.

frequently asked questions

1.

What is an IFT?

IFT stands for interfacility transportation, meaning ambulance transportation from one healthcare facility to another. IFT is utilized when a patient requires a medically necessary transfer to another healthcare facility.

2.

Why is Ivinson taking on IFT transfers?

Ivinson and the City of Laramie were in discussion for over two years to find a solution that ensured the sustainability of IFT while addressing the financial and operational challenges that accompany the service.
  • With a different cost structure than the City, Ivinson will be able to operate this service for a substantially lower amount than what the City needed to continue service, outside of initial capital investments.
  • Ivinson has always valued the exceptional patient care that Laramie Fire Department staff have provided and plan to work closely with them in the transition to ensure that same quality is sustained.

3.

Who will staff the IFT service once it transfers from the City of Laramie to Ivinson Memorial Hospital?

Ivinson plans to hire fifteen (full-time equivalent) staff members that will consist of both EMT/Drivers and Paramedics.
  • There will be full-time (3240 hour) a week positions, part-time (1231 hour) a week positions and PRN (as needed) positions.
  • These staff members will work 12 hour shifts and there will be 247 coverage for IFT. When not on transfers, staff will continue patient care in many of our critical care units including the Emergency Department and the Intensive Care Unit.

These newly hired positions will be added staff to our current team, to focus solely on transfer services.

4.

Will I receive two bills for EMS services?

Until September 1, 2025, Ivinson will continue to bill on the City of Laramie’s behalf for all EMS services including local 911 ambulance transfers and IFT. Once Ivinson takes on the operations of IFT, patients will receive a bill from Ivinson for any IFT and a bill from the City of Laramie for any local 911 response. If patients only utilize one service, they will only recieve a bill for that service.

5.

Will my bill for IFT transfers increase under Ivinson?

No. This change will not affect the charges patients receive from Ivinson for this service.

6.

Will this change cause more flight transfers out of Laramie?

No. IFT transfers under Ivinson will not impact the number of flight transfers that occur.
  • Patients qualify for flight transfers based on the severity of their condition.
  • Flights will not be utilized as a replacement for ground transport services.
  • We will continue to utilize flight transfers as we have in the past, based on the needs of the individual patient.
